About Samara Morgan

Initially, Samara appears as a pretty (although withdrawn) and young girl with brown eyes. In addition to these features, she had long brown hair and fair skin. She wore a white nightgown.

In her cursed form, Samara is very haunting in appearance, resembling a Japanese onryō, a spirit focused on vengeance. Her hair is now black and soaking wet, hiding her waterlogged and deformed face which has turned somewhat grey in colour with sunken eyes. Her skin has become an unnatural moldy colour, although when she climbs out of a television, her skin appears a murky grey. In addition to this, her white dress becomes tattered and soaked with water, turning it brownish-yellow, grey, and black.

She helped popularize the “string-haired ghost girl” horror trope in Western cinema, although the trope has long existed in Japanese culture. She is portrayed by Daveigh Chase in The Ring, Kelly Stables in Rings (Short Film) and The Ring Two, and Bonnie Morgan in Rings (2017 film).

Samara Morgan is the vengeful ghost who wrecks havoc in the popular movies, The Ring, The Ring 2, and Rings. Her character is based on Sadako Yamamura from the original Japanese version of The Ring. Samara was born with evil inside of her, and while the source of her supernatural power is not quite known, they certainly exist and led to her biological mother trying to drown her.

Following this incident, Samara was adopted by another family, however, she accidentally used her abilities to burn horrifying images into her adoptive mother’s mind. Unable to cope, her adoptive mother pushes her into a well where she drowns. Not to be defeated, Samara is unleashed back into the world as a ghost.

When a group of high school students staying in a remote cabin watches an old videotape which has been cursed by Samara’s spirit. Anybody who watches the tape has a 7-day deadline where they are tormented by the ghost of Samara Morgan until their ultimate death.
