About Freddie Mercury

Growing up in Zanzibar and India, Freddie took formal piano lessons as a young child and spent many years learning the guitar. Upon moving to England, Freddie was passionate about music and put together the band we now know as Queen. Their most notable performance took place at Live Aid in 1985 and has since been considered the greatest live performance in the history of rock music. During the performance, Freddie’s sustained note in the a cappella section is known as “The Note Heard Round the World.”

Freddie became diagnosed with AIDS in late April 1987 but kept his condition under wraps from the public despite widespread rumors concerning his health. By 1990, Freddie’s gaunt appearance led to increasing speculation that he was sick, and in November of 1991, Freddie released a statement to confirm that he, indeed, had the disease. Just a mere 24 hours later, Freddie died at the age of 45 in his home from bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS.
